Teachers’ Linguistic Politeness in Classroom Interaction: A Pragmatic Analysis

This study aimed to uncover the different structures of linguistic politeness used in utterances teachers classroom interaction. More specifically, analysis made use House and Kasper’s (1981) Politeness Linguistic Expressions, Brown Levinson’s (1987) Strategies, Leech’s (1983) Maxims. Using observation interview, several were unearthed. Firstly, expressions involved markers, consultative devices, downtoners, committers, forewarning, hesitators, agent avoider. Secondly, strategies positive politeness, negative off-record strategy, bald-on record strategy. Lastly, maxims tact, approbation, modesty, agreement maxim. is a non-value-laden phenomenon where it does not always mean what people here-and-now take mean, but there can be conventional ways expressing so particular social The politenesss do lead conflict-avoidance, they only contribute success effect used. Hence, whatever may seem have been considered as conventionally conventionalized or non-conventionalized context, factors must need for an expression form strategy that performs supportive facework.
